The Silver Screen

May 16, 2008

As the start of summer comes closer, movie houses begin to fill. As teenagers and adults alike file into theaters, the silver screen starts as a blank canvas that eventually will be painted with humor, action, horror, and drama. While some choose to go to the theaters as a way to beat the sweltering summer heat or because they have nothing better to do, for some the movie experience offers an escape from reality. Among the movies coming out this summer, some of the most anticipated are WALL-E, Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Hancock, The Dark Knight, and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.

This summer, millions across the United States will step into a theater and dedicate between an hour and two hours of there day to see the newest movie. For some, this time spent will be quite rewarding, while for others a terrible mistake. Of all the movies I have seen, I have only walked out of one, and wanted to walk out of one. The movie I did walk out being Master and Commander and the movie I did want to walk out of being the recently released The Forbidden Kingdom.

The Forbidden Kingdom wasn’t terrible, but I wouldn’t call it great either. Being the patient and considerate person that I am, I was willing to sit through the hour and half. While the fight scenes were decent at best, the acting of the main actor, Michael Angarano, was something out of a Disney movie. It was almost like the actor was trying to ‘fool’ the audience into thinking that he was some great martial artist. While Jackie Chan and Jet Li did there best to entertain us with there creative fight sequences and clever one liners, it couldn’t make up for the poor acting of the main character. It was just that bad. As soon as you began to become interested in the movie, he would make you laugh. As I found myself fighting the urge to laugh, I realized half the theater was already laughing. As the end of the movie came to a close all I could think was where was Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita (Karate Kid) when you needed them.

As packs of people file out of the theaters, everyone becomes a movie critic. Everyone wants to express what they though about it. Whether it be good or bad, everyone has there own opinion. As this summer begins, I can only hope that other movies prove worthy of the $11.00 admission, rather than the Kazaam like experience The Forbidden Kingdom provided.
