Marriage: Logic Or Emotion?

June 28, 2009

Here is the plan: You graduate from college, you get a good job, you find a nice girl, you get married, have kids, and then you retire and travel the world. Sounds simple doesn’t it? Unfortunately it isn’t. Instead, trying to plan out your life is like trying to predict the weather without knowing where you are nor what time of the year. While many may feel discouraged and disappointed when life doesn’t go according to their ‘master plan,’ perhaps that is what make life so beautiful.

You wake up not knowing if it’ll be sunny or cloudy, but when you do get a sunny day, it makes your day more enjoyable. If every day was sunny and predictable, what would make it special? Marriage is much the same. Finding love as opposed to infatuation makes a relationship meaningful and special. For some of us, love happens once in a lifetime while infatuation happens every day.

Logic Versus Emotion

So why do you want to get married? That is the big question that many people ask those that say they want to get married. Is it for love? Is it for financial stability? What is it? While you may get different responses, the reason for getting married can be broken down into two distinct categories: Logic and Emotion. Continue Reading…

The College Hangover

June 17, 2009

As the alarm buzzes so begins the debate. The debate whether or not getting up and getting ready for class is really worth it. As you weigh your options you debate over the following: (a) You can skip class and get the notes from someone else or (b) go because your class grade depends on it. While the responsible choice is to go to class, not everyone is responsible.

For many recent college graduates, it appears that nothing has changed. You still want to sleep in and you don’t want to get up yet. The big difference is that if you decide to sleep in and ‘skip’ class you can’t just make up what you missed by getting the notes from a fellow classmate. Instead you are missing out on your future. While it is easy for many of us to just hit the snooze button, and sleep for what seems like an amazing 5 minutes, too often do recent college graduates carry over this mentality into life after college.

It what can be described as a sort of college hangover, what many fail to realize is that time waits for no one, and the sooner you can ‘sober’ up, the better. Reminiscing about all the good times you had during college is great, but it is even more important to look toward the future. Continue Reading…

Starbucks: An Icon Of Globalization

June 7, 2009

Would you ever pay $5.00 for a pack of gum? My guess is that a majority of you would say no. While paying $5.00 for a pack of gum may sound absurd, ‘gourmet’ gum may be just around the corner. With the days of $.50 coffee a thing of the past and cappuccino’s and latte’s become mainstream, Starbucks has turned shelling out big money for ‘simple’ products the norm.

If you drive through any big city in the United States, you probably wouldn’t have to look far to find a Starbucks. With it’s green and white logo, it sometimes feels like Starbucks opens new stores just for fun. Just the other day I saw 2 Starbucks in the same plaza. Whether it is by mistake or a strategic marketing strategy, Starbucks continues to open new stores and with it comes new Starbucks aficionado’s.

Winning Solves [Almost] Everything

June 1, 2009

In an ideal world, you would never lose. Winning would be easy and losing would be a figment of the imagination. Unfortunately, we can only dream about that kind of world. Instead, losing is a reality which makes winning that much more important. In the past month or so I have heard ramblings about how great LeBron James is and how he and Kobe Bryant were destined for a classic NBA finals which would be remembered for all times. Instead, Nike is pulling their Kobe/LeBron commercials faster than Isiah Thomas is being forgotten, and LeBron is getting ready for a long summer. With LeBron unable to make it to the NBA finals, the rumor mill is starting to gain momentum. While there are still those that talk about how great LeBron is, the fact remains that LeBron has won nothing.

With Cleveland unable to make it to the NBA finals comes a new set of problems. With LeBron able to opt out of his contract next summer, Cleveland is in the position to lose one of the greatest superstars because they weren’t able to do one thing: win. People often like to quote the popular statement “Winning isn’t everything,” but what people fail to realize is the whole quote:

Men, I’ll be honest. Winning isn’t everything. Men, it’s the only thing! — Henry Russel Sanders

It is ironic that a quote that so many people use to console those who have lost is actually part of a quote meant to instill the idea that winning is the only option and that it’s all that matters. Continue Reading…
